Before buying jewellery or a watch on Black Friday, check the metal and its hallmark, then read the size, the movement and the returns terms. Items described as gold, silver, platinum or palladium must carry a UK hallmark above set weights. Personalised pieces and earrings with a broken hygiene seal can be hard to return, so check the terms first.
Hallmarks on gold, silver and platinum jewellery
Hallmarks are the main proof of precious metal on UK jewellery. GOV.UK says items sold in the UK and described as gold, silver, platinum or palladium must carry a hallmark above certain weights, whether sold in a shop or online.
| Metal | Hallmark needed above |
|---|---|
| Gold | 1 g |
| Silver | 7.78 g |
| Platinum | 0.5 g |
| Palladium | 1 g |
The hallmark is applied by one of the UK’s four Assay Offices, and includes a sponsor’s mark showing who submitted the item. Ask for a close photo of the mark on anything over those weights. Words such as gold-plated or gold-tone describe a surface, and the description should say so plainly.

Necklaces: chain length and clasp
Necklace choices come down to length, clasp and how the piece will be worn. Check the chain length in centimetres, since the same pendant sits very differently on a short and long chain. A lobster or trigger clasp tends to feel more secure than a small spring ring, so look at the photos closely.
Pendants on fine chains are easy to catch, and heavier pendants need a chain that can hold the weight. If you are buying a gift and do not know the person’s taste, an adjustable chain or a classic length is the safer guess.

Check the chain length and the clasp in the photos, and look for a metal stamp. The links below sort listings by chain style.

Watch movements and water resistance
Watches differ most in their movement and how much water they can handle. Quartz watches run on a battery and need little attention, while automatic watches wind from the movement of your wrist and need occasional servicing. Choose automatic for the mechanism and quartz for simple timekeeping.
Water resistance ratings can mislead. Seiko’s glossary says a 30 metre rating is fine for splashes or rain, but not for swimming or diving. Look for the case size and the strap material as well, and check what size wrist the strap will fit. On a used watch, ask when the movement was last serviced and for photos of the back, crown and clasp.

Decide between quartz and automatic, then check the case size against your wrist. Listings by brand and style are below.

Returning jewellery and watch gifts
Returns on jewellery are worth reading before you pay. Citizens Advice says online purchases from a business usually come with a 14-day cooling-off period, but bespoke and personalised items are excluded. A broken hygiene seal can remove the right too, and earrings are the example it gives. Items bought from private individuals are not covered.
