Perfume shopping in the UK comes down to three checks: the concentration on the bottle, the scent family you enjoy, and how far you trust the seller. Fake fragrances are a known problem, so read the listing closely. Check the labelling too, and read the returns terms before you pay.

Concentration is the first thing to read on any bottle. The Fragrance Shop says eau de parfum is always more concentrated than eau de toilette, though the exact strength varies by brand. Compare like with like, because two bottles of the same scent in different concentrations are different products.

Fake fragrance is the main risk in this department. Plymouth City Council advises buying from a trusted retailer and watching for poor labelling, spelling mistakes and wording such as “similar to”. Bolton Council warns that fakes may contain harmful chemicals and that the scent can fade quickly.

UK labelling gives you a few more things to check. Business Companion says cosmetics sold in England, Scotland and Wales should list ingredients and show a batch number and the name and address of a UK responsible person. A seller should be able to show these in clear photos of the box and bottle.
