The clothing items that give the fewest regrets are the ones you have checked against a size chart, a fabric label and a returns policy before buying. Measure a garment you already own, compare it with the listing, and read the material and care details. Fit and fabric matter more than the brand name.

Start with measurements. Sizes vary between brands, so two garments with the same size label can fit differently. Pay attention to whether a chart gives garment measurements or body measurements, because they are not the same thing.

Next, read the fabric. Cotton, wool, viscose, polyester and blends each wear and wash differently, and the care label tells you whether a piece needs dry cleaning or can go in the machine. Knitwear in particular is worth checking for the fibre mix, since it affects warmth, pilling and shrinkage.

For outerwear, look at the lining, the fastenings and how the sleeves and shoulders are cut, and think about the layers you will wear underneath. Bought secondhand, a coat or jacket should come with clear photos of cuffs, collar, pockets and zips.
