Before buying a skincare set, match it to your skin type, read the ingredient list and check the shelf-life marking on every item. Compare the size of each product rather than the number of items in the box. Sets also make poor returns once opened, so read the seller’s terms and look for sealed packaging first.
Matching a skincare set to your skin
A skincare set works best when you would happily buy each item in it on its own. Sets often bundle a cleanser, serum and moisturiser, and one item that does not suit you turns the rest into a partial purchase.
Start with the products you already use and finish. A set that repeats a step you have covered adds clutter, while a travel set can be a low-commitment way to try a new routine. For gifts, gentle and simply scented sets are the safer guess when you do not know the person’s skin.
Reading the ingredient list on a skincare set
The ingredient list is the most useful part of any cosmetic label. UK guidance from Business Companion says ingredients appear under the heading Ingredients, in descending order of weight, so the first names are the largest amounts.
Anyone with sensitive skin should read this list carefully. The NHS says cosmetics can trigger allergic contact dermatitis, and its advice is to avoid the allergen and check ingredients on products you use. If you already know what irritates your skin, ask the seller for a photo of the ingredient panel when a listing does not show it.

Checking shelf life and expiry dates
Shelf-life markings come in two forms on cosmetics, and a good set shows one or the other on each item. The table also lists two other label details worth checking.
| Marking | What it means |
|---|---|
| Best used before the end of, followed by a date | Used on products with a shelf life of 30 months or less |
| Open-jar symbol with a number and M | Used on products lasting over 30 months; shows the months of use after opening |
| Batch number | Lets the maker trace the product |
| UK responsible person’s name and address | Should appear on the container and packaging |
Ask a seller for the date or the symbol when photos do not show it, especially on older boxed sets. An open-jar symbol only counts from the day you open the product, so a set kept sealed for a long time can still be worth questioning.
Imported and second-hand skincare sets
Imported sets, including Korean skincare, are worth checking for a readable ingredient list, English labelling and a UK responsible person. Business Companion lists that name and address as a labelling requirement in England, Scotland and Wales. A listing that cannot show them may be a direct import.
Avoid opened skincare from private sellers. You cannot tell how it was stored or whether it has been used, and products in pots are harder to judge than pumps or sealed tubes.
Returns on skincare gifts
Returns are the last check, particularly for presents. Citizens Advice says items bought online from a business usually come with a 14-day cooling-off period, but a broken hygiene seal can remove that right. Items from private individuals are not covered. Keep a gift sealed until you know it is wanted, and check how long the seller allows for returns.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know how long a skincare product lasts?
Products with a shelf life of 30 months or less carry a date after the words Best used before the end of. Longer-lasting products carry an open-jar symbol showing how many months they stay good after opening.
What does the UK responsible person on a label mean?
Cosmetics sold in England, Scotland and Wales should show the name and address of a UK responsible person on the container and packaging. A set without one may be a direct import, so ask the seller.
Can I return an opened skincare set?
Often not. Citizens Advice says a broken hygiene seal can remove the 14-day cooling-off right on online purchases. Items bought from private individuals are not covered by that right either.
