Before buying bedding, match the duvet’s tog rating to the season and the room, then check every size in centimetres. Duvet covers and fitted sheets vary, and US names such as Queen and Full do not match UK beds. Read the fabric and care details too, and check whether a set includes pillowcases.

Duvet tog ratings by season

Tog is the UK measure of a duvet’s warmth, and a higher number means a warmer duvet. The Duvet Store groups them by season:

Season Tog range Notes
Summer 2.5 to 4.5 Light cover for warm nights
Spring or autumn 6 to 10.5 The middle of the range
Winter 12 to 18 13.5 is the most widely used

Silentnight groups them a little differently, with 2.5 to 7 tog for spring and summer and 10.5 to 13.5 for autumn and winter. It says 18 tog is the highest in the UK. Treat these bands as a guide, since a warm bedroom may need less than the chart suggests.

All-season duvets are two lighter duvets that join together, such as 4.5 and 9 tog. Weight is a poor guide to warmth, and The Duvet Store notes that down is lighter than hollowfibre at the same tog.

Duvet cover and sheet sizes

Bedding sizes in the UK are not fully standard, so check the centimetres. Piglet in Bed lists its duvet covers at 140 x 200 cm for a single, 200 x 200 cm for a double, 225 x 220 cm for a king and 260 x 220 cm for a super king. Compare those figures with your own duvet, since other makers may vary.

Fitted sheets also need the right depth. Piglet in Bed gives 30 cm of depth on its own fitted sheets, so measure your mattress height first. A deep mattress or a topper can pull a shallow sheet off the corners.

US bedding names on a UK listing

US bedding names can turn up on UK listings, particularly on imported sets. Twin, Full and Queen are not UK sizes, and a comforter is a filled top layer rather than a duvet cover. Read the measurements in centimetres before you buy, and ask the seller if the listing gives inches only.

Fabrics, fillings and care labels

Bedding fabrics change how a bed feels and how much washing it takes. Cotton is breathable and easy to wash, linen feels crisp and cool, and brushed cotton feels warmer in winter. Microfibre tends to dry quickly but can feel less airy.

Duvet fillings matter too. Feather and down suit people who want a lighter feel, while synthetic fillings suit anyone avoiding feathers. Check the care label before you buy, since a big duvet may not fit a home washing machine.

Bedding returns and hygiene seals

Bedding returns are worth checking before you open a packet. Citizens Advice says online purchases from a business usually carry a 14-day cooling-off period, but a broken hygiene seal is one of the exceptions, and items from private individuals are not covered. Ask the seller before you unwrap pillows or duvets you may want to return.

Frequently asked questions

What tog duvet do I need in the UK?

The Duvet Store groups duvets as summer at 2.5 to 4.5 tog, spring or autumn at 6 to 10.5, and winter at 12 to 18. It calls 13.5 tog the most widely used for winter. An all-season duvet joins two lighter duvets, such as 4.5 and 9 tog.

Is a heavier duvet always warmer?

No. The Duvet Store says weight does not equal warmth, because tog measures warmth rather than heft. Down is lighter than hollowfibre at the same tog, so compare the tog figure instead of how heavy a duvet feels.

Does a Queen or Full bedding set fit a UK bed?

Not reliably. Queen, Full and Twin are US names, and their measurements differ from UK sizes. Check the centimetres in the listing against your own duvet and mattress, and ask the seller if the listing gives none.
