Black Friday 2026 Furniture in the UK: The Department Guide

With furniture, the delivery route decides as much as the design does. Measure every doorway, stair and landing before you choose, then check the sofa’s listed dimensions and its fire label. Read the delivery and returns terms too, because bulky items are hard to send back and made-to-order pieces may not be returnable at all.

This department covers upholstered living room furniture. The sofas guide explains how to measure a route and what to ask about frames and cushions. The sofa beds guide compares click-clack, fold-out and pull-out mechanisms, with the room you need once the bed is open.

Measuring comes first for both. Barker and Stonehouse advises comparing doorway width with the sofa’s depth or height if it can go through sideways, and allowing 5 to 10 cm of wiggle room. Listed dimensions leave out the packaging, so a sofa can be slightly larger on the day it arrives.

Fire safety is the check that applies to every upholstered piece. Business Companion says new upholstered furniture must carry a permanent label headed Carelessness Causes Fire, usually behind a loose cover at the back or under a seat cushion. Used furniture must meet the same flammability standards when a business sells it, so ask for a photo of the label on a second-hand piece.

Returns deserve a careful read. Citizens Advice says the 14-day cooling-off period on online purchases does not cover bespoke or made-to-measure goods, or items from private individuals. Check who pays for collection if the sofa needs to go back.
