Worktop appliances are easiest to choose when you start with how you will use them. Pick a coffee machine by the drink you want and the cleaning you will put up with, and a stand mixer by batch size and attachments. Measure the space under your cupboards as well, because some models are noticeably taller than others.

Space and capacity decide most stand mixer choices. KitchenAid UK says its tilt-head mixers are about 3 inches (7.5 cm) shorter than its bowl-lift models, which matters under low cupboards. Kenwood describes its 4.6 and 5 litre Chef models as ideal for everyday use and its larger Chef XL models for bigger batches.

For either appliance, check that a used machine comes with its parts and a UK plug. Ask a seller what is included, how often the machine was used, and whether it was descaled or serviced. Read the returns terms before you pay, since a heavy appliance is awkward to send back.
