Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and parfum

All fragrance is a mix of scent oils and alcohol. The more oil, the stronger the scent and, generally, the longer it lasts. Eau de toilette is lighter. Eau de parfum is richer. Parfum, sometimes labeled extrait, is the most concentrated and is usually sold in smaller bottles.

Lighter strengths suit daytime and warm weather. Richer ones suit evenings and cooler days. Neither is automatically better, and the same scent can be sold in more than one strength with a slightly different character.

Most perfumes blend several families. The description lists top, heart and base notes, which tell you what you smell at the start and what remains hours later.

Trying a scent properly
