What the strength on the label means

Fragrance strength comes down to how much scent oil is mixed into the liquid. Eau de cologne has the least. Eau de toilette is stronger, eau de parfum stronger again, and pure parfum has the most.

Stronger versions usually last longer and sit closer to the skin. Lighter ones feel brighter but fade sooner. None of these names is a measure of quality, and a good eau de toilette can beat a weak eau de parfum.

Scent families

Perfumers layer three levels of notes: top notes you smell first, heart notes that follow and base notes that linger. Two scents with the same family label can still smell quite different.

Sample before you commit

Scent changes on skin, so a bottle that smells good on a paper strip may smell different on you. Try a sample or a small travel size when you can. Wait an hour or two to let the base notes show.

Bottle size in ounces and milliliters

Bottles come in a range of sizes, commonly listed in ounces or milliliters. One ounce is about thirty milliliters. A bigger bottle gives you more to use, but it only makes sense if you know you like the scent.

Travel sizes and rollerballs suit trying something new, or carrying it in a bag. Check the size in the listing title and description, since similar-looking bottles can hold different amounts.

Gift sets and what they include

Sets often pair a bottle with a shower gel, aftershave balm or a small travel spray. Read the list of contents rather than the box art. The extras may be full size or tiny, and the main bottle in a set can be smaller than the standalone one.

Some sets are made for gifting only, with a bottle size or product combination not sold on its own. That is fine, as long as you know what is inside.

Telling real from fake

Counterfeit fragrance is a known problem. Signs of a genuine bottle include clean printing, a sealed box with cellophane wrap, matching batch codes on the box and the bottle, and a smooth, even sprayer. Odd spelling, uneven labels and missing codes are warning signs.

Testers, unboxed bottles and decants are sold legitimately, but they should be labeled as such.

Making it last

Store fragrance away from sunlight and heat, with the cap on. Bathrooms are poor spots because heat and humidity break scent down. Apply to clean, moisturized skin at the neck and wrists.

How much to wear

Two or three sprays on the neck and chest is enough for most colognes. Stronger concentrations need less. Wearing too much can overwhelm people nearby, and your own nose adapts to a scent after a while, so you may stop smelling it before others do.

Buying online

On marketplace listings, look for clear photos of the actual box and bottle, including the batch code if shown. Confirm the brand, the exact name, the strength and the size in the description. For new items, the box should be sealed. Read the seller’s feedback for fragrance sales in particular, and check the return policy before you order, since opened scents are often not returnable.
