Start by deciding whether you need a freestanding, integrated or built-under model. Integrated appliances sit behind a cabinet door and need a matching gap and the correct fixing kit. Freestanding ones stand alone but still need clearance for ventilation and for hoses and cables. Write down the measurements of the space, including any pipes, sockets and the position of the door swing.

Next, consider how the appliance is connected. A dishwasher or washing machine needs water supply and drainage within reach. An electric oven or hob may need a dedicated circuit, and a gas cooker needs a safe connection by a qualified installer. Factor in installation and the removal of your old appliance when you compare options.

Then look at running costs and noise. Energy labels and noise ratings are printed on the product and in the listing, and they matter more over years of use than a feature list does. Read the fine print about what the model actually includes, such as shelves, racks, hoses and fixing kits.
