Audio gear is easier to choose once you know where you will use it. For earbuds, check fit, noise cancelling and the water resistance rating. For headphones, decide between on-ear and over-ear. For a turntable, confirm that something in your setup includes a phono preamp, or the record player will not sound right.
Wireless earbuds and water resistance
Wireless earbuds vary most in fit, noise cancelling and how well they cope with sweat. Open-ear and sport designs tend to stay put during exercise, while in-ear models with noise cancelling suit commuting and travel. A secure fit also shapes how they sound, so check which ear tip sizes come in the box.
Water resistance is widely misunderstood. Apple says AirPods are not waterproof or sweatproof, and that they should not be used for swimming, water sports or showering. Ratings such as IPX4, IP54 or IP57 vary by model, and Apple notes that resistance can diminish over time and cannot be rechecked or resealed. Treat a used pair’s rating as a guide at best.

Beats headphones: on-ear or over-ear
Beats headphones come in on-ear and over-ear styles, and the two best-known models show the difference. SoundGuys compares them this way:
| Feature | Beats Solo 4 | Beats Studio Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Style | On-ear | Over-ear |
| Active noise cancelling | No | Yes |
| Bluetooth | 5.3, with SBC and AAC | 5.3, with SBC and AAC |
| Wired listening | 3.5 mm analogue or USB-C | 3.5 mm analogue or USB-C digital audio |
| Equaliser presets | None built in | Three, when wired over USB-C |
Pick noise cancelling if you travel or work somewhere loud, and the on-ear design if you want something smaller to carry. Check which model a listing actually offers, since the names are similar across the range.

Turntables and phono preamps
Turntables need one extra part that often catches first-time buyers out. Audio Advice explains that a phono preamp, also called a phono stage, boosts the very weak signal from the cartridge, around 1,000 times lower than a CD player’s, and applies the RIAA equalisation curve, so the signal has to go through one before you can hear it properly through speakers.
Some turntables, receivers, amplifiers and powered speakers include one. Check each part of your setup before you order. Some receivers have a Phono input with no real stage behind it, and a ground screw beside the sockets is a useful sign of a genuine one. Belt or direct drive and any built-in Bluetooth or USB are the next things to compare.
Turntables to compare
Check whether the turntable has a built-in preamp, or plan to add one. The links below sort listings by drive type and brand.

Buying used audio equipment
Used audio gear rewards a few extra questions. Ask how long the battery lasts on wireless products, since it cannot usually be replaced at home. Ask a turntable seller about the stylus condition and whether the platter spins evenly. Read the returns terms too, as earbuds touch your skin and sellers may not take them back once opened.
