Pick a stroller by style, then check the fold, weight and car seat compatibility. Test the handle height, the basket and the brakes. Confirm what is in the box, read the manual, and check the return policy before you buy.
Pick the style for how you live
| Style | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size | Sturdy, large basket, comfortable seat | Bulky and heavier |
| Travel or lightweight | Light, compact fold | Smaller basket, fewer features |
| Jogging | Large wheels, smooth ride on paths | Bulky, not for tight shops |
| Double | Two children in one frame | Wide, heavy |
Many families end up with two strollers, one for everyday errands and a lighter one for travel. If you can only have one, think about where you spend most of your time: city sidewalks, suburban paths, or a car trunk.
The fold and the weight
Try to find out how the stroller folds. Some fold in one move with one hand, which is very useful when you are holding a child. Check the folded size against your trunk and your hall closet. Then look at the weight in the listing, because you will be lifting it.

Car seat compatibility
If you plan to click an infant car seat into the stroller, check the compatibility list from the maker. Some strollers need adapters that are sold separately, and some only accept the same brand. Make sure the car seat and the stroller are listed as working together, then read the manual for how to attach the seat.
Comfort for both of you
Look at the handle height, which should suit the tallest adult who will push it. Check whether the handle is adjustable. For the child, look for a seat that reclines, a canopy that gives shade, a harness that adjusts as they grow, and a footrest.
Wheels, brakes and storage
Larger wheels roll over bumps and rougher paths more easily. Smaller wheels turn in tight spaces. Check that the brake is easy to engage with a foot and holds the stroller still. Look at the basket size and whether you can reach it with the seat reclined.
Safety and use
Read the manual, and follow the maker’s instructions on age, weight limits and use. Use the harness every time and apply the brake when you stop. Avoid hanging heavy bags on the handles unless the maker allows it.
Buying online
Check the model name and photos against the maker’s page. For used strollers, ask for clear photos, check that all parts and the harness are present, and confirm the return policy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a full-size and a travel stroller?
A full-size stroller is sturdier and has more storage. A travel stroller is lighter and folds smaller, but usually has fewer features.
Can a stroller take an infant car seat?
Some can, with the right adapter or as part of a travel system. Check the listing for compatible models.
Can I run with any stroller?
No. Jogging strollers are built for it, with a fixed front wheel and suitable brakes. Follow the maker's guidance on age and use.
